Family, friends and neighbors are invited to attend a poster session highlighting summer intern science projects at Jefferson Lab
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Undergraduate and high school student participants in the summer science internship programs at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility invite members of the media and the public to attend a poster session showcasing their summer projects. On Friday, Aug. 4, 11:45 a.m.-1:15 p.m., the interns will be available to present and discuss their work with attendees. This is the first in-person session since 2019.
Lisa Surles-Law is the Jefferson Lab Science Education team lead. She says the dedication of the students’ research mentors and the science education team members ensured the students each had the opportunity to work on high-caliber projects.
“The time staff members have spent with the students, as well as their encouragement and the resources they provide, confirm why we’ve been doing internships for as long as we have,” she said.
DOE national laboratories offer an exceptional opportunity for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce development by providing access to prominent scientists, world-class research facilities and instrumentation, and extensive, multidisciplinary research programs. During the summer program, the interns acquire knowledge in a wide variety of research fields, from nuclear physics to engineering.
Held in-person for the first time in four years, the science summer internship programs at Jefferson Lab allowed interns to gain hands-on experience in an extensive range of different projects.
The summer science interns include:
- 13 students participating in the DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program.
- 1 student participating in the Community College Internship program.
- 10 students participating in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program.
- 2 awardees receiving the Mexican Physical Society Award.
- 12 students participating in the High School Summer Honors Internship program.
The poster session will take place in the atrium of Jefferson Lab’s main administration building, CEBAF Center, which is located at 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA 23606. Directions can be found here.
The interns’ respective summer projects directly involved them in the culture, activities and science of a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory.
“It’s neat to see the community embrace this. We have lab leadership popping into presentations and things like that – it’s a Jefferson Lab cultural event,” Surles-Law said.
Members of the media, public, family, friends, and teachers are welcome to join the students for their presentations and celebrate a summer of hard work and invigorating research.
