Steven Hoey brings more than 30 years of environment, safety and health expertise to Jefferson Lab
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has announced that Steven Hoey has joined the team as its new Director of Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) in February, bringing over thirty years of technical expertise to the senior operations team.
As the ESH Director, Hoey will be responsible for managing and improving the safety protocols and serving as the lab’s chief safety officer. He will direct all ESH programs including, industrial safety, radiation protection, occupational medicine, industrial hygiene and emergency management. This includes development, implementation and evaluation of ESH initiatives, injury and illness prevention strategies, safe work practices, event investigation, program and policy development, and all ESH education and training.
Hoey spent 25 years with Brookhaven National Laboratory located in Upton, New York, in a similar role providing leadership on the senior management team for a variety of projects, systems, processes and machines. The sister DOE facility shares regulations with Jefferson Lab, and Hoey spent time traveling doing peer and layman reviews of other facilities including Jefferson Lab.
“I had previously visited Jefferson Lab for project reviews with the DOE during my time with Brookhaven,” said Hoey. “I covered the environmental, safety, and health portions and worked with my now predecessor, for reviews. I was impressed by the depth of the programs in place and am looking forward to continually improving the already well-established programs.”
Hoey is joining the lab after seven years of working in chemical production where he managed the ESH program including the design of toxic chemical containment systems, the formulation of hazard safety protocols and the institution training procedures to keep exposures limited.

His vast expertise in the environmental and safety space will be a great asset to the lab and continue the strong partnerships across the DOE community,” said Jefferson Lab Director, Stuart Henderson. “His familiarity with the lab will allow Steven to hit the ground running and connect his experience with the current ESH programs in place.”
“Jefferson Lab offers the opportunity to be more focused on a particular mission and machine than past efforts with competing resources,” said Hoey. “With several years in the private sector, I’m looking forward to bringing both sides of my experience and my previous work with Jefferson Lab to continue moving the mission forward in a safe manner.”
Hoey said that he’s excited to return to working on the East Coast at Jefferson Lab, “I’ve spent most of my life on the East Coast and enjoy the changing seasons that we’ve missed while in southeast Texas. My wife and I enjoy remodeling houses and are looking forward to getting back into sailing.”
