Save the Date: Jefferson Lab plans to celebrate 40th anniversary with Open House event on June 8, 2024
NEWPORT NEWS – Plan now to help us celebrate forty years of science at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Open House event on June 8, 2024. The free event allows people of all ages to explore Jefferson Lab’s world-class research facility. Attendees can enjoy tours of the lab’s unique facilities, a plethora of hands-on activities and dozens of interactive demonstrations.
“It’s been nearly six years since our last open house. We’re thrilled to once again open our doors to the public for this truly special event,” said Jefferson Lab Chief Communications Officer Lauren Hansen.
Some of the most popular tour stops include portions of the unique Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. More than 1,800 scientists from around the world carry out groundbreaking research with CEBAF to understand the basic building blocks of matter. Members of the public will also be able to enter active research and development centers, cryogenic facilities and our supercomputing center.
For this year’s event, the lab will display highlights from its 40-year history. Jefferson lab was founded August 3, 1984. It has grown from a handful of buildings and a few dozen employees to a fully developed 170+ acre site with more than 800 employees and 1,000 people on-site daily.
As always, there will also be plenty of hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations for children, including the very popular cryogenics show. New this year, the lab will feature its data science capabilities and the bright future this new mission enables.
“In addition to CEBAF, our world-class electron accelerator, the public will also have the opportunity to learn more about our new data science mission and what that means for the lab, Newport News and Hampton Roads,” Hansen said.
