HUGS 2023

With support from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Jefferson Science Associates (JSA), lectures at the 38th Annual Hampton University Graduate Studies (HUGS) Program at Jefferson Lab are scheduled to run from Tuesday, May 30 to Friday, June 16, 2023. In-person students will arrive at Jefferson Lab on Monday, May 29 and depart on Saturday, June 17.

The HUGS Program at Jefferson Lab is an educational summer program designed for experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics graduate students who have finished their coursework and have at least one year of research experience in these fields. Students who are well into a research project are also encouraged to apply. The program is simultaneously intensive, friendly, and casual. All lecturers are internationally renowned and leaders in their fields. Acceptance into the program is competitive, and a limited number of scholarships is available. The school is best experienced in person, and will culminate in a 2-days program of student seminars. The students will be housed on site at Jefferson Lab, and there will be many opportunities to interact with Jefferson Lab staff, as well as the lecturers, other graduate students and visitors.

To increase the accessibility of the school, we will also offer a hybrid component. Students who choose this option will be able to attend all the main lectures and topical seminars on Zoom, and to present their research to all of their HUGS peers in a virtual poster session. A few other activities will be organized on-line.

Please note: All Jefferson Lab visitors are still required to arrive with proof of vaccination or a negative test result before they will be admitted on site. In the event of a COVID resurgence with elevated regional contagion risk as determined by the CDC, the school may become fully virtual, like last year, or be canceled. Please, keep an eye on this website for such an announcement. Accepted students will also be notified directly.

Quantum Computing Boot Camp:

As a special event on the week right after HUGS, Jefferson Lab is organizing a Quantum Computing Boot Camp. With the introductory topical seminar by Raghav Jha, the HUGS student will be just ready for that! Student support is available, see the QCBC 2023 home page.

Student Support:

Thanks to a grant from the United States Department of Energy, we will be able to offer a limited number of standard HUGS fellowships that will cover lodging at the SURA residence facility (where kitchen facilities are available) and a contribution towards meal expenses. Students interested in this opportunity should note so in the registration page, and address their financial need in the appropriate field. (Please also ask your advisor to comment on this in their reference letter.) The deadline is March 12th, 2023.

In addition to these, we are happy to announce the JSA/HUGS fellowship for Graduate Students from Developing Countries supported by the JSA Initiatives Fund Program is back this year, and with deadline on March 8th, 2023. Under this fellowship, that supplements the standard one, we will be able to support up to two graduate students from a developing country, fully covering travel expenses (including international airfare), room, board. An additional visit of 1 or 2 weeks to Jefferson Lab may be possible, depending on funding, to meet with laboratory researchers and users, and to initiate or strengthen a research collaboration. For those with children, you may be eligible for the JLab Fund for Extra Child Care (ExCARE) support.
